Barolo, San Rocco, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

Creamier, darker fruited, less wild herb and salts, more currants and licorice, with a smooth veneer of coffee nib and flashy, hearty black raspberries, pastry and plums, balanced by a firm spine of acidity. Today, San Rocco presents as the most open, round, and immediately satisfying of the crus. San Rocco is predominantly south facing, though there are two exposures in San Rocco which helps to round out the mouthfeel. An Azelia monopole, San Rocco is a top notch Serralunga vineyard that faces south and southwest, where the soils are practically 100% clay, a very hard compact grey clay. The vines are over 70 years old. Aged exclusively in large oak botti for two years.

critic reviews

94/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2021 Barolo San Rocco marries finesse and power. Firm tannins drive through a core of red-toned fruit, iron, white pepper, dried rose petal and chalk. The 2021 is deep and resonant on the palate, but it also offers notable saline-infused vibrancy. It's a dynamic Barolo in the glass that reveals myriad shades of nuance over time.
