Barolo, San Rocco, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

Full, pungent and ripe aromatics hit you straightaway. There is a sweet earthiness and spice to this. Dense, rich and sumptuous, the broadest and fullest of the estate’s three crus. Voluptuous, very powerful fruit. Complex dried sweet spices, fleshier plum and plum liqueur fruit set in a robust tannic framework. An Azelia monopole San Rocco is a top notch Serralunga vineyard that faces south and south west, where the soils are practically 100% clay, a very hard compact grey clay. The vines are 60 years old and the wine is aged in the same way as the Bricco Fiasco, for 24 months in 8% new oak barriques.

critic reviews

95/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

There is a lot of fruit ripeness in the 2015 Barolo San Rocco, with blackberry, wild berry, plush softness, spice and licorice. The fruit is nicely balanced and shows bright intensity. Located in Serralunga d'Alba, San Rocco was purchased by Luigi Scavino's father in the 1990s. The vines are 65 years old today. Some 6,600 bottles of this vintage were made.

The 2015 Barolo San Rocco is the most potent and structured of the Azelia Barolos. Swaths of tannin enshroud this tightly wound, classically austere Barolo. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2015 for at least a few years. This is one of the more reticent young Barolos I have tasted at Azelia.
