Chianti Classico, Riserva, Il Campitello, 2014

justerini & brooks tasting note

Salty, crisply fruited, wonderfully open and alluring red berry flavour. Notes of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry with fresh bitter sweet herbal touches. Not as ageworthy as the 2013, perhaps, but arguably giving a lot more pleasure in its youth. A vineyard of 420 metres altitude facing south west, this aspect was crucial in ensuring full grape ripening in the cooler 2014 vintage. The South-east facing Baron d’Ugo struggled to ripen and therefore was not made. A blend of 90% Sangiovese 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino from a 40 year old single vineyard, South West facing, planted on Albarese (hard limestone ) and Galestro (softer limestone ) soils. The wine is aged in large French and Slavonian oak casks for 26 months.

Monteraponi's 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello offers impressive surprises. I would not have expected this level of finesse and fine elegance from a vintage that delivered so many challenges in terms of adverse weather and lack of summertime luminosity. This Riserva takes it all in comfortable stride. It offers a dark and more robust taste profile with black fruit, leather and tobacco. The mouthfeel is thin and compact for sure, but what it does not deliver in terms of power, it compensates with in finesse.
