Chianti Classico, Riserva, Il Campitello, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

Along with 2006 and 2016, Michele and Ale make no bones about the fact that they consider 2019 in their trio of best vintages ever. So fragrant and moreish and sophisticated, with fine fresh tannins, intense but all on the red fruits with complex spices and a long stony finish. Super elegant and only 13.5% ABV. Hard to find fault in this. Chianti at its finest. The oldest vineyard at Monteraponi, at 55 years old, Campitello is perched at 440m above sea level, separated from the estate’s highest vineyard by a forest. It’s water retentive clay soils yield a very fresh, complex and well-structured wine. Sangiovese is the key component, with Canaiolo and Colorino making up 10% of the blend. After a natural, spontaneous fermentation in concrete, follows a long 40 day maceration, then ageing in large French and Slavonian casks for 26 months.

critic reviews

95/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The organic Monteraponi 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is a beautiful wine that expresses itself elegantly, thanks to balanced fruit, good concentration and well-dosed intensity. The wine is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino and 5% Canaiolo with berries from 55-year-old vines on a mix of schistous galestro and limestone alberese soils. It offers a noticeably darker appearance with aromas of pressed blackberry, button mushroom and blue flower. This Riserva maintains a wild but delicate personality throughout, with a spot of crushed white pepper in a distant background role. Only 6,600 bottles were made.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is a wild, powerful wine. Black cherry, sage, menthol, gravel, incense and tobacco show the more virile side of Sangiovese off to great effect. This potent, brooding Riserva needs time in bottle to fully come together. Even so, it is pretty impressive in the early going.
