Château Larcis Ducasse, Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, 2004

justerini & brooks tasting note

A Château that is on the up. The second vintage of this wine since being brought into the Pavie-Macquin stable, the 2004 is Merlot based with 20% Cabernet Franc. Entrancingly elegant, packed with fine ripe cherry and juicy berry fruit, mineral notes and soft enveloping tannins.

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 2004 Larcis Ducasse rolls out of the glass with open-knit scents of stewed plums, dried cherries, and sauteed herbs, followed by hints of damp soil, fallen leaves, and charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush with plenty of freshness, delivering mature, savory layers and an earthy/mineral-laced finish.

The 2004 Larcis Ducasse is surprisingly deep in colour. It boasts a really lovely bouquet considering the vintage, one you might suspect belongs to a richer growing season like 2005: blackberry, raspberry coulis, mint and a touch of juniper berry and sandalwood. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well judged acidity, impressive in terms of fruit intensity: blackberry, cranberry and strawberry mixed with tobacco and black pepper. Very cohesive with a gentle grip on the finish, you could broach this 2004 Larcis Ducasse now, but it will unquestionably give another couple of decade’s drinking pleasure. Punches above its weight. Tasted at the Larcis Ducasse vertical in Bordeaux.

The 2004 Chateau Larcis Ducasse appears to be in fine fettle. Deep in color, it has a ripe and outgoing, fruit-driven bouquet for a 2004, abundant dark plum and cassis fruit intermingling with incense and violet aromas. The palate has commendable depth and concentration, denser than many Right Bank wines of this vintage, lush but without denuding this Larcis of requisite freshness on the finish. On this showing, I can foresee this offering another 15 years of pleasure. This is well worth hunting down, as it is probably still reasonably priced. Tasted February 2016.
