Château Mouton Rothschild, 1er Cru Classé, Pauillac, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

The Mouton range was an absolute delight to taste this year. Philippe Dhalluin and his team have produced some sumptuous, lavishly fruited wines that are texturally very alluring. Mouton in particular was much more open and fragrant than normal. Aromas of Asian spice, crème de cassis, potpourri, graphite, truffle, black cherry and menthol waft from the glass. Usually Mouton at this stage is reserved and required considerable coaxing to evaluate its aromatics. The palate is also more forthcoming than we are used to. Swathes of charming, seductive fruit cascade over the palate. Texturally this is like pure cashmere with gorgeous, opulent tannins and a pure crème de cassis finish. Excellent.

The 2015 Mouton-Rothschild has a very Pauillac-like bouquet with cassis, violet and pencil shaving aromas that are all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins. This is so sapid with touches of shucked oyster shells toward the persistent finish. It is excellent. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

Leans in more to the exuberance of the vintage than Lafite, but still with the effortless balance and stately steady-as-she-goes elegance of the Pauillac Firsts in 2015. Grilled sandalwood and cedar, crushed raspberries, crayon and graphite, expands through the palate, love this, thoroughly luscious but with a sense of restraint on the finish. Philippe Dhalluin technical director, Eric Boissenot consultant. 100% new oak for ageing. Gerhard Richter label artist.
