Kirchenstück, Spätburgunder, Grosses Gewächs, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A clear step up to the GG, which has a more concentrated, polished bouquet and deeper fruits along the lines of forest fruit and dark cherry, complimented by a cleansing acidity and a wash of supporting tannins that will see this age well. Kirchenstück is in the village of Hohen-Sülzen where the soils have a high proportion of limestone and loess. The classified Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) section is only a small portion of the vineyard, which means this GG comes from the very best bit.

critic reviews

93/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

HO Spanier's 2022 Hohen-Sulzen Kirchenstuck Spatburgunder GG has a ruby-red color and rises from the glass with intense, open, slightly smoky and delicately toasty but also salty and iodine-like fruit of dark, concentrated and baked cherries and berries. Silky, elegant and full of finesse on the palate, this is initially a light-footed, elegant and delicate, persistently salty and even zesty Pinot from limestone soil. It is dry, firm and grippy, very intense and young, but despite its substance, it is salty and uplifted in the long-lasting finish. One can only hope that its impressive substance will take hold of the oak over the years in the bottle. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
