Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

Laurent Dufau, Vincent Millet and Eric Boissenot produce one of the most sought after wines in the Medoc. It is always stylish, well priced, and there simply isn't enough to go round. Denise Gasqueton's decision to separate Capbern vineyard in 2006, coupled with the low density planting means that there is a supply issue... Anyone lucky enough to get the 2015 will be delighted. Produced from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, it is aromatically classic: cut flowers, cassis, liquorice and crushed rocks. There is a slightly degradation to the fruit which is rather charming. The palate is elegantly proportioned with pure crème de mûre fruit and hints of cranberry. One cannot claim that this is a profound wine; it is classy, pretty, refined; a Calon with finesse and a delicate tannic profile.

critic reviews

94/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2015 Calon-Ségur has a gorgeous, fresh nose with raspberry and cranberry fruit, fine delineation and, as I wrote before, exquisite oak integration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's a little toasty at the moment, with good depth and a touch of allspice toward the dense finish. Perhaps this doesn't possess the complexity of the very top vintages from Vincent Millet, yet it has the legs to last many years. Tasted at the 2015 Ten-Year-On tasting at Bordeaux Index.

Captures the texture and power of great St Estèphe, with aromatic fragrant spice, blueberry and cassis fruit, and has plenty of joy to deliver. Great quality at the ten year point, just about ready to drink at this point but decades ahead. Crushed roses on the finish, lighter framed than the 2016 but this is a lovely wine. 100% new oak for ageing. Vincent Millet director.
