Château La Mission Haut Brion, Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan
Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Château La Mission Haut Brion, Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan, 2010

justerini & brooks tasting note

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc with yields of 41 hl/ha. This is a macho La Mission, a la Mission that beats its hirsute chest and roars. Cool herbs, minerals, crushed rocks and cassis fruit on the nose. Decadent, pure fruit; huge, multilayered, powerful, immense - this possesses tremendous concentration, huge levels of glycerine and wave after wave of suave cool purple fruit. This is an enormous La Mission in every sense: concentration, alcohol, tannins and length of flavour. Finishes with dark fruit, a hint of liquorice and immense, gravelly tannins.

critic reviews

98/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Vibrates with life, still barely unfurling at 14 years old, with evident muscular construction to the tannic frame. A little subdued on the first nose, quickly opening to show notes of black pepper, cinammon and black truffle alongside liqourice, baked raspberries and blueberry fruits, concentrated, vivid and sculpted, architectural as all the best 2010s are. Drawn out finish, riven with spiced cocoa beans and pulses of fresh acidity, and the drumbeat of interest is going to keep playing for decades. 75% new oak for ageing, harvest September 8 to October 8.

Even though the 2010 La Mission Haut-Brion was poured at the château, Jean-Philippe Delmas had to call for a second bottle as the first was clearly out of sorts. That second is magnificent. Brilliant delineation and almost overwhelming with intensity on the nose, there are layers of black fruit, pencil lead and a strong marine influence with hints of Japanese nori. The palate has a wonderful backbone and more precision than the Haut-Brion, with a persistent, captivating finish. It will need time. Tasted at the château.
