Vosne Romanée, Aux Malconsorts, 1er Cru, 2012

justerini & brooks tasting note

All whole bunch fermented, which is 10% more than usual and aged in 60% new oak but you can’t taste it. Great force and length, dark floral bramble and autumn berry flavours with complex undergrowth, mineral and smoke touches. Dense, complex yet so bright and lifting, great energy. Superb

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru les Malconsorts from Domaine de Montille was a vexing showing. Here it displayed a reduced nose, very savoury, almost animally with game and dried blood notes infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly ferrous red berry fruit, a little savoury in the mouth and some dryness marking the finish. Not unattractive, though you would never describe it as being the "the best in show." Furthermore, it seems to lose some of its clarity in the glass. I will reserve judgement based on this showing.

(13% alcohol; 60% new oak): Bright medium red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoky minerality and dried flowers. Plush, highly concentrated, outsized wine, combining grand cru volume with a surprisingly airy texture. Finishes with wonderfully suave tannins that saturate the entire palate and give shape to the wine's fruit. Really outstanding soil-driven depth here.
