Volnay, Clos des Ducs, 1er Cru, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

This has to go down as one of the most ethereal, elegant and expressive young Clos des Ducs we have tasted. Stylish, complex and intense in equal measure. This has a composed, assured quality that belies its strength and power. A cooling minerality offsets the fresh red and blueberry fruit. High-toned notes of cherry blossom complete the picture, echoing on the long finish. Intense and deep without carrying any excess weight. Sublime. The 52 "ouvrees" or 2.15 hectares that this great Clos vineyard spans, measure exactly the same as in the early part of the 16th century, its earliest recorded mention. The poor soils and steep, well drained slope of this limestone and marne vineyard tilts towards the south and south-east. The wines typically boast contrasting elegance and structure. Complex and harmonious, they have a great ageing capacity.

critic reviews

95-97/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, the famous 2.15-hectare monopole of the domaine, is matured in around 25% new oak, although Guillaume d’Angerville mentioned that he intends to use less new oak in the future. It has a very intense bouquet of raspberry preserve, kirsch, blood orange and sous-bois aromas, all displaying wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fabulous density and complexity, offering brambly red fruit, blood orange, orange peel, suggestions of dark chocolate and, of course, wonderful mineral tension on the persistent finish, which fans out beautifully. This is an exceptionally fine Volnay that will age for 30–40 years.
