Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

This is the most accomplished Bonnes-Mares Bruno has made. As is usually the case there is more muscle and obvious structure than in either of the Clos de Bèze or Clos St.-Jacques yet not at the expense of finesse or balance. Bright, racy, crunchy red berry and cherry fruits with notes of mineral, herb and undergrowth overlay the firm foundations. Intense, crispy and gripping. A statuesque vin de garde style of wine that also boasts the most beautiful quality of fruit. Mighty and noble. One tiny parcel of 0.12 hectares is situated on the Chambolle side of the vineyard. The predominant core of this cuvée comes from two parcels in the Morey commune, one of which is next to Clos de Tart, planted on limestone-rich marne blanche soils giving a structued and powerful style of Bonnes-Mares. One part was planted in 1946 another in 1980.

critic reviews

96/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an intense bouquet with blackberry, redcurrant and cranberry scents laced with tobacco and woodland aromas. Lovely definition and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, enormous depth and great concentration, perhaps the most Musigny-esque of the Bonnes-Mares. Great length but it needs some serious cellaring. Enormous potential here. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.
