Puligny Montrachet, Les Combettes, 1er Cru
Etienne Sauzet

Puligny Montrachet, Les Combettes, 1er Cru, 2020

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A brooding, initially quiet nose. This is equally layered and mysterious on the palate, at first glance -though there is a sense of real drive and elegance here. A wine of gravitas and intensity that builds stylishly into bright, melt in the mouth flavours of honeysuckle, butter, citrus blossom and orange zest. Long, expansive and in perfect equilibrium. A tour de force. Sauzet's example of Combettes is one of the great Premiers Crus of Puligny, up there with Caillerets and Leflaive's Pucelles. From 50-65-year-old vines in the well-exposed Combettes vineyard. Like Champs Canet this is mid-slope but with a little less limestone and more clay.

critic reviews

94/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru is nuanced and complex on the nose, with a mixture of yellow and white fruit, crushed stone and a faint oatmeal touch. It shows wonderful delineation and focus. The oak is nicely integrated here, though it is much more understated than Carillon's Les Combettes. The palate is well-balanced with a sheen of new oak that is perfectly proportionate to the fruit intensity underneath. Again, quite a spicy, almost peppery finish leaves the tongue tingling long after the wine has exited. Fresh and saline, this is a marvelous Les Combettes that should age well in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is excellent, offering up aromas of stone fruits, pear, pastry cream, white flowers and fresh croissants, followed by a full-bodied, rich and textural palate, with a broad attack that segues into a layered, multidimensional palate. Powerful and broad shouldered, but nicely balanced, this is a compelling wine from Sauzet.
