Côteaux du Lyonnais sits in the hills to the west of Lyon, outside the official boundaries of the Rhône Valley. The cooler temperatures here make for a very different style of wine compared to Syrah and Grenache, and instead Gamay is grown, bringing the appellation closer in style to Beaujolais. Some white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Aligote, usually in a light, fresh style. The relative anonymity of the region, as well as its potential for growth, has attracted some famous producers including Clusel Roch, of Cote-Rotie fame.
