Vijariego Negro

A black variety found mainly in the Canary Islands, famed for ripening well and being quite productive, with large grape bunches. Wines are typically red fruited with fresh acidity making it a good blending partner particularly in Catalunya, where it is known as Sumoll, but also in the Canaries where it takes on a more mineral and deeper profile. There are, however, a handful of producers that bottle it as a single varietal including Borja Perez in Tenerife. Ref. Wine Grapes, Robinson, Harding and Vouillamoz. Ed. 2012.
