David & Nadia’s Veiling (Auction) Chenin Blanc 2022

16 May 2024

An uber-rare, auction Chenin Blanc of startling purity and focus

Today’s offer likely represents the rarest Chenin Blanc you’ll come across this year. Bought and shipped from the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction late last year, just 60 six-bottle cases were released out of a total of 88 cases produced.

By waiting a few extra months to offer the wine now, this extra time has allowed the 2022 to unfurl and exhibit all the qualities in the glass that it promised in our early tastings. As such, it is approachable now after a quick decant, but will age with grace over at least the next ten years if desired.

Produced by leading Swartland winemaker, David Sadie, this auction wine is a meticulously selected blend from each of David & Nadia’s thrillingly successful single vineyards: Hoe-Steen, Plat Bos, Skaliekop and Rondevlei. Whole cluster pressed and raised in either concrete, foudré or neutral barrel, depending on the component, this is the finest, most startlingly pure and finessed Chenin Blanc expression you are set to encounter. It embraces all the Burgundian, satin-like golden fruits of the Hoe-Steen; the pinpoint salinity and granitic thrust of the Plat Bos; and the florality, stoniness and juicy lift of the Skaliekop. Rondevlei – a more recent addition to the single vineyard range – lends a ripe delicacy and smooth timbre to the finish. What’s more, this all clocks in at a filigreed 12.5% alcohol, proving that with the right level of viticultural attention, the deeply complex soils of the Swartland can produce wines of immense vitality and complexity without any excess sugar. All four sites are bush vine trained and certified as part of the Old Vine Project. Planting dates range from 1968 to 1985. Simply put, Chenin Blanc doesn’t get much better than this.

We have just ten cases available, offered on a first come first served basis.

For those unfamiliar with the Cape Winemakers Guild, this charitable organisation is set up to promote the sharing of skills and knowledge, ensuring that South Africa’s leading producers take an active mentoring role, and champion real and meaningful transformation to improve inclusion and diversity in the wine industry. Funds raised from the auction go towards the hugely successful Cape Protégé Programme; a bursary to fund less privileged, aspiring winemakers through their technical training and into the workplace over three years. Furthermore, the Guild has produced this illuminating 3-minute clip charting the story of David & Nadia wines.
