New releases : Y de Yquem and Le Petit Cheval (Blanc)

18 September 2024

Traditionally, Bordeaux whites lacked the allure of their Côte de Beaune counterparts. However, a growing number of passionate and experimental vignerons have been pushing the boundaries, creating vibrant and engaging wines that can more than match the competition from Burgundy (and further afield).

We’ve been championing the Guinaudeau’s excellent Les Champs Libres for many years. Made from Loire clones and vinified in French barrels, this new interpretation of Bordeaux Sec is a refreshing antidote to the rather lacklustre Sauvignon/Semillon blends of old.

The team at Cheval Blanc has also found the winning formula. Planting white varietals on the former vineyards of La Tour du Pin (between Cheval and Figeac), they have crafted a vibrant, crisp style for Le Petit Cheval. Where deep, water retentive clay is a barrier to producing great reds, it is a positive boon for whites. We love the incisive flavours, the luminous fruit core and the glorious texture. Hardly surprising, given this is one of Bordeaux’s great winemaking teams. The 2022 displays the warmth and sunshine of the vintage with a lively supporting acidity, which makes this so moreish.

Yquem’s dry white “Y” also continues to raise the bar. 2022 was the warmest and driest harvest in living memory. Picked between the 9th and 24th of August to retain freshness and zip, the 2022 boasts a powerful core of white fruits, citrus and flowers, supported by bright, mouthwatering acidity. It’s fascinating to see this dry interpretation of Yquem’s legendary terroir.
