Château d'Armailhac

Château d'Armailhac, 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac, 2019

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Produced from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2019 d’Armailhac is fragrant and pleasing. Initially there is plenty of clove infused fruit, interspersed with savoury, mineral notes. Very Cabernet dominated: cassis, vanilla and spice. The palate is packed with juicy griotte and hints of chocolate. Not profound, but there’s an honesty and freshness that points towards a good future. The tannins are quite chalky and a touch rustic, but we expect élevage to smooth out any rough edges. This should be a good value Pauillac.

critic reviews

95/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2019 d’Armailhac has a deep garnet color, with a touch of purple. It gallops out with open-knit, flamboyant scents of black cherries, blueberry compote, and mocha, followed by wafts of blackcurrants, chocolate box, and vanilla pods. The medium-bodied palate is chock-full of wonderfully plush, textured black fruit preserve layers, lift by a refreshing line, and finishing oh-so-decadently.

The 2019 d'Armailhac is very perfumed, quite floral on the nose, touches of mint and cassis pinning this down as a Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight bitterness on the entry. The tannins are rougher than its peers, yet balanced with a fresh saline, rather sinewy finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

94/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Deep ruby in colour, smoked oak on the nose, giving power and tannic frame without sacrificing the salinity and florality that is so present in Armailhac. Cassis, loganberry, cigar box, muscular tannins, cocoa bean, ash, a wine full of savour and character. 56% 1st wine. 50% new oak, and extended time in barrel for ageing, up to 18 months. Jean-Paul Voelert technical director.
