Château Hosanna, Pomerol, 2003

justerini & brooks tasting note

This is only the fifth vintage made under this name from the vineyard formerly known as Certan-Giraud, but it has already stacked up an impressive back catalogue of triumphant successes. Only 10ha of the whole property go into the wine, made up of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and despite the large investments that have been made both in the winery and vineyard, the Moueix mantra of tradition and purity hold sway. The result in 2003 is stunning: a big, powerful nose introduces intense, sweet, almost minty fruit on the palate, which shows meaty complexity and great overall richness. This is full-bodied Merlot, powerful yet balanced, with a grace that comes from respect of the terroir and the grape. There is good acidity, great purity and clarity of fruit, and a very long finish. Very impressive!

The successful 2003 Hosanna has turned out to be a sexy, opulent, medium to full-bodied wine offering loads of berry fruit, licorice and truffle characteristics. There is no trace of dry tannins or underripeness in this beauty. It once again proves that Christian Moueix is a genius in culling out the finest fruit from this estate, which was once known as Certan Giraud. This 2003 should be drunk over the next 4-5 years.

Full medium red. Sexy nose offers red raspberry, mocha, truffle and toffee. Sweet, dense and lush in the mouthy, with nicely concentrated flavors of red fruits, caramel and toasty oak. Finishes with sweet tannins and noteworthy persistence. A very successful effort for 2003: today I find every bit as much energy and primary red fruit character here as in the 2003 Trotanoy.
