Château Hosanna, Pomerol
Château Hosanna

Château Hosanna, Pomerol, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

Produced from 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc on gravel and red clay on iron-rich subsoil. Hosanna is often the most exotic in the JP Moueix line-up. This has a wonderful perfume of intoxicating spice, black cherry liqueur, eucalyptus, blood orange, gunflint, smoke and black tea leaves. The palate is awash with glorious, seductive black fruits; it’s almost inky with palate staining liqueur chocolates, damsons, black plum and prune. A striking Hosanna, which deftly balances its immense core of hedonistic dark fruit and spice, and still retains a sense of tension and verve. Fine grained tannins coat the palate with salty minerals, liquorice, and Valrhona chocolate. Impressive, decadent and cohesive; a complete and rather splendid Hosanna.

98/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

The 2019 Hosanna is a blend of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has the most gorgeous perfume of rose oil, chocolate-covered cherries, and licorice, followed by wafts of blueberry pie, forest floor, and black truffle. The full-bodied palate has amazing concentration, depth, and tension, delivering exquisitely ripe tannins and a very long, layered finish.

The 2019 Hosanna comes across as a tad underwhelming on the nose with blackberry and raspberry coulis, though just a few swirls, and it begins to find its voice. It is still quite expressive after several minutes. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins that frame the plush yet precise black fruit, judiciously spiced with a long and tender finish. Top class. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

This lays on the blackberry and black cherry fruits like a concentrated puree and I am already imagining pairing it with a good Brébis cheese. Excellent stuff, just pulls back from being too sweet with an influx of slate, bitter black chocolate, iodine, tobacco, cigar box. Restrained but exuberant, excellent. Harvest September 20 to October 3.
