Zellerweg am Schwarzen, Herrgott, Grosses Gewächs, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

This has salt and minerals in abundance, but also golden fruit that is tightly packed and brimming with energy and racy acidity. Green apricot and stone fruit flavours dance like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Real intensity and focus in a very nimble package. Fabulous.

critic reviews

93/100David Schildknecht,Vinous

On the nose, moss, wet stone, sea breeze and pungent green herbs anticipate the flavor interest to come while pointing (as with a number of Spanier’s youthful 2018s) to a positive influence of reduction. Fresh lime and white peach serve for animating juiciness while the moss and green herbs transform into cooling stimulation on an alluringly silken palate. This finishes with a luscious fruitiness that until a few years ago I would never have predicted from a Battenfeld-Spanier bottling, but a fruitiness that engages dynamically with myriad elements of a mineral nature.

The 2018 Molsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG is coolish, bright and refined on the herbal and floral-scented as well as flinty nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a full-bodied, silky-textured, very fine yet intensely aromatic dry Riesling with a long and complex, powerful but elegant, mineral finish. Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.
