Zellerweg am Schwarzen, Herrgott, Grosses Gewächs, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

The first touch of reduction, then notes of freshly cut peaches and dewy grass, crystalline and finely tuned aromas. On the palate a sense of nervously detailed fruit sets the tone. A tightly knit ball energy and crushed limestone minerality propels this across the palate as fine lemon , grapefruit, and Williams pear notes appear. This is all white and pale yellow fruit, salty citrus and jasmine across the long finish in this the most linear and direct of the cuvees. A vineyard that surrounds the west of Molsheim, South/South East facing, pointing towards the Zeller valley which brings a near constant wind to dry and concentrate the fruit. We're almost on the Pfalz border here, the Donnerberg mountain to the West increasing the diurnal shift, as cool winds flow from the Palatinate forest. Fully limestone and one of the oldest vineyard sites in Germany, first recognised in the 8th century.

The 2019 Molsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG is intense in color and flavors but still a raw diamond with fine notes of crushed limestones and cool winds. The attack on the palate is pure and fresh, tight and very salty before the wine reveals its complexity and compact structure. This is a very elegant and salty-piquant Riesling with lemon notes and very fine tannins. This is a Riesling with power, purity, finesse and a serious grip. Exciting! Tasted as a barrel sample in April 2020.
