Zellerweg am Schwarzen, Herrgott, Grosses Gewächs, 2022

justerini & brooks tasting note

“The Showman” Oliver says, and indeed there is often an exuberance here. The 2022 is perhaps the standout wine in the range this year, for us, breathing crackling, cool cassis, waxy lemons and salt crystals on a river of fresh, invigorating acidity. The vines here quickly hit dark limestone and the effect on the palate is one of deep, dark structured minerality. This is one of the oldest known vineyard sites in Germany, first recognised in the 8th Century. It sits on the Pfalz border with the Donnerberg mountain to the west, from where cool winds often flow.

96/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2022 Molsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott GG reveals a delicately chalky bouquet with blueberry, woodruff and white pepper aromas. Silky and very elegant on the palate, this is a terribly fresh and mineral, finely tannic and persistently structured Riesling with lemon fresh bitters on the finish. This is a pure, lean but intense, full-bodied Riesling made to be aged for a decade. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

The 2022 Riesling Mölsheimer Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Grosses Gewächs immediately impresses with ripe Amalfi lemon aromatics, still tinged with a tiny bit of flinty reduction. Large limestone rocks define the stony soil. Underneath that, creaminess and subtle stone fruit appear. The palate comes across as cool, profound and subtle. That lemon intensity is accentuated by a slightly yeasty texture that leans into the lemon pith. The lemon note is the strongest amidst lasting coolness and beautiful definition. Very long and pure. (Bone-dry)
