Zellerweg am Schwarzen, Herrgott, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

A GG of deep minerality imbued with pulpy limes, cut apples, aniseed, fennel and pink grapefruit, the Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott is super complex with a honed, controlled, inner strength. Wonderful. The vines here quickly hit dark limestone and the effect on the palate is one of structured minerality. This is one of the oldest known vineyard sites in Germany, first recognised in the 8th Century. The vineyard is technically split in to two sections – the Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott which sits administratively in the Rheinhessen, whilst the part below the road is dubbed just Am Schwarzen Herrgott under jurisdiction of the Pfalz. Both have dark limestone soils and are heavily influenced by the Donnersberg mountains to the west, from where cool winds flow.

The 2023 Molsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott GG is beautifully clear and distinctive on the decisive chalky nose that is more "liquid earth" than anything else here at the domaine. There are notes of crushed limestone, lemon rind, fresh lemon juice, a touch of flint stone and lots of salts. Very elegant and savory on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense, very complex and finely tannic Riesling with a straight course on the palate and a long, tight and vivacious, stimulating saline finish. There is an attack on the palate, with a bite in your mouth after you have swallowed the wine, that makes it so exciting. It's an impressive Riesling from pure limestone. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Mölsheimer Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Grosses Gewächs already has a suspicion of citrus lift and lemon oil purity on the nose. That purity comes with exquisite fluidity and inherent coolness on the palate. This is totally zesty with pervasive freshness, elegant, light and gracefully contoured—pristine, in fact. (Bone-dry)
