Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Marquis de Calon Ségur, St Estèphe, 2021

The second wine of Calon Segur is beginning to build a following. Much more Merlot in style than Capbern, more voluminous, but not as refined or precise. There's pleasing sweetness, even a slight jamminess here, but it remains translucent and the tannins appear ripe. 58% Merlot with 42% Cabernet Sauvignon.

89/100
Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Starts off with perky blueberry fruits, fine tannins, light in structure, with savoury lemongrass and slate construction. Perky and will be easy to approch within a few years of bottling. High Merlot in the blend which also explains its atypical feel. 36hl/h yield. 30% new oak, 57% of overall production.

A blend of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Le Marquis de Calon Segur is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It jumps form the glass with notes of baked plums, boysenberries, and Morello cherries, plus touches of sauteed herbs, pencil lead, and underbrush. Light-bodied, the palate is a little thin yet refreshing with herbal sparks to the red and black fruits, finishing savory.

The 2021 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, which was bottled June 2023, has dispensed with that Right Bank allure it hinted at out of barrel. Now in bottle, this is firmly in the Northern Médoc, with blackcurrant, loam and just a light scent of pine. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with just a touch of greenness on the entry, which I really like. There is a freshness and vibrancy to this Deuxième Vin that really comes through, showing a lovely granular texture and a hint of brine on the finish. This has kicked on nicely during its time in barrel and comes recommended.

Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur

This is the most northerly of all the wines classified in 1855. The estate is steeped in history, once forming part of the Segur estate which incorporated Phelan Segur as well as Lafite, Latour and Mouton. The Marquis de Segur famously declared that ‘I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon’. This presumably explains the proliferation of hearts at the estate and on the label.

More recently, following her husband’s death in 1995, Denise Capbern Gasqueton has managed the estate. Her wines are classical, true to their terroir and have found much admiration from collectors and drinkers. Madame Capbern Gasqueton passed away in 2011 and the estate has been sold to the French Insurance company Suravenir. A new chapter starts...
