Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan, 2021

Daniel and Florence Cathiard along with their talented Technical Director, Fabien Teitgen continue to raise the bar at this high-flying Pessac estate. We're huge fans of their sumptuous, sleek style. The 2021 is very much in the house style but reflects the tension and nerve of the vintage. Flowers over dark fruits, perfumed, spicy, hints of camphor, liquorice and dark cocoa nibs. The palate is beautifully textured, packed with decadent fruits and spices, layers of velvety plums and creme de mûre. This is seductive yet serious, finishing with beautifully judged tannins that tantalize the tastebuds. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Inky ruby in colour, with vivid reflections, this successfully walks the line of the vintage, delivering quality and a sense of drama, campfire smoke, crushed rocks, sage, cassis, bilberry, blueberry and damson fruits. Silky tannins, stands out for its quality, one to look out for, and will age to at least 15 year, but deliver pleasure far earlier. Harvest September 22 to October 14. 60% new oak (for a little less time than usual). 23hl/h yield.

The 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, aging in 60% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little swirling before it bursts with vibrant black cherries, fresh blackberries, and blackcurrant cordial scents, followed by hints of violets, star anise, and cedar chest. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a great density of fresh black fruits and earthy layers, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, leading to a long finish with a spicy kick on this very impressive wine. At 22 hl/ha, yields are less than half of 2019 and about half of 2020, with 1/3 of the crop going into the Grand Vin this year.

Bottled last June, the 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte has a ripe bouquet for the vintage: black cherries, licorice, Provençal herbs and a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a deft touch of black pepper and graphite, building toward a finish that exerts a gentle grip. It is slightly less marine-influenced than the barrel sample, but it is still a very decent Smith Haut-Lafite. This year, it must accept that the white has the upper hand.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Daniel and Florence Cathiard have taken this Pessac estate to the next level. The wines here outshine many of the top names from the more fashionable communes and are challenging the likes of Haut Bailly, La Mission and even Haut Brion for supremacy in the Graves. Their 2009 received a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker and we think the 2010 is even better. The style is pure seductive fruit and a silky texture; the quality is exceptional. Kudos to Daniel and Florence for turning this good, but slightly underperforming estate into one of the finest in Pessac Leognan.
