    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Pessac Léognan, 2009

80% Semillon 20% Sauvignon blanc, aged in a third oak but this far from dominates the wine, spicy and fleshy but with pure, clear stone fruit flavours of nectarine and peach with a twist of lemon and citrus rind freshness, hints of ripe gooseberry too, creamy textured with shades of hazelnut complexity. Exquisitely refined, elegant and complex, a first rate white graves that gathers increasing momentum the longer it stays in glass.

Just enough age to really showcase the ability that Chevalier white has to power through the years. Fleshy but precise white peach and green apple fruits. Now that it has a few years in bottle, the quince and white pepper notes are beginning to show themselves, and this is a white wine to make you smile, and to gulp back in way too short a time, with sappy acidity giving persistency, wet stone tension and mouthwatering pleasure. Poised and structured, and very good. Drunk on a boat at sundown, with great friends, a lovely moment of the year.

The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc offers orange blossom, quince and dried honey on the well-defined bouquet. I like the manner in which this unfolds with aeration. The palate is well balanced with great depth, very well judged acidity with just the right amount of salinity and a brisk, focused finish. What an outstanding white from Pessac. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Olivier Bernard's extensive project at Domaine de Chevalier has really come to fruition. After a bold and not to mention expensive re-planting program throughout the `80s and then a decade and a half of patience for the vines to gain maturity, we can really see the benefits. 2005, 2008, 2009 and now 2010 rank amongst the very best wines produced in this sprawling commune. Powerful but graceful, true to their terroir, and just so enjoyable to drink; this has become one of our 'must buy' estates. Olivier's wines offer 'super second' class at relatively affordable prices.
