Azelia, Barolo, Riserva, Voghera Brea, 2000

Luigi Scavino was fortunate enough to set up a contract for this stunning 50-year-old Serralunga vineyard from the 2000 vintage. This is a Riserva wine that will only be made in the best vintages, and what a debut! The palate is bursting with flavours, notes of aniseed, black cherry, cassis, cinnamon and liquorice. A serious, multi-layered and highly pleasurable wine aged in new and second year oak for three years, with two years’ bottle age. Stunning!

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Voghera Brea has blossomed into a far more beautiful wine than I could have ever imagined when it was first released. The flavors are dark, bold and richly expressive, with plenty of Serralunga volume, but also considerable aromatic presence, all nicely balanced by precise tannins. A huge, resonant finish laced with the essence of rose petals, mint and sweet red berries adds to the wine's considerable appeal. The Riserva spent 42 months in Slavonian and Austrian oak casks.
