Another 100-points for Artuke

Awarding it his overall red wine of the year and reaffirming their position as one of Rioja’s first growths, Artuke is on a roll at the moment. Sadly, the wine sold out on initial release at the tail end of 2023 but re-tasting the whole 2021 range last week at Atkin’s event in London, we were struck by the remarkable purity and windswept elegance of the Paso Las Mañas – in our view the finest, most clearly mineral and precise, pixelated vintage to date. Produced from outstanding young vines, it is the site that shines here – a cool, high altitude vineyard that ripens late with small berries. As one of the very few Rioja producers to make wine according to Burgundian timelines and philosophy, this is a great opportunity to secure an early glimpse of 2021, a vintage which Atkin believes is “the best since 2001.”

Paso Las Mañas comes from one of the highest vineyards in Samaniego, located on very poor soils at 720 metres. The vines are only eight years old, but there's no shortage of concentration or intensity here. Pine and rosemary aromas are a scented introduction to a palate of impressive precision and minerality, with subtle reduction and cranberry, plum and pomegranate fruit. 2025-35.– 95pts, Tim Atkin MW.
