Chapelle d'Ausone, St Emilion Grand Cru, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

Alas, there are just 2000 bottles of the superb Chapelle d'Ausone. Floral and quite delicate, refined and salty, with oyster shells, blueberries and violets. Lovely fine poise here, even keeled and bright, with a great balanced between salty minerals and berries. Very harmonious with superb texture, refined, graceful tannins and plenty of density. Produced from a highly unusual blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon.

critic reviews

93/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

A blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Chapelle d’Ausone is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a lot of swirling to bring forward notes of fresh raspberries, Morello cherries, and cardamom, giving way to hints of iron ore, pencil shavings, crushed rocks, and lavender. The light-bodied palate is wonderfully delicate, with a quiet intensity of red berry and mineral layers, supported by very fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Very pretty! Only about 3,500 bottles were made.

Cloves and sage spices, touches of fennel, redcurrant, with a brightness to it that is rare in 2021, and fine tannins that give form to the fruit. Cleary lighter than in most years, but unquestionable finesse. As I noted during En Primeur, one of the rare 2nd wines that truly delivers in 2021n abd is one to look out for. Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, harvest October 4 to 6. 90% new oak (down from 100% in most years). Single point upgrade.

The 2021 Chapelle d'Ausone has a well-defined bouquet, the Cabernet Franc firmly in the driving seat here, with pencil box and undergrowth infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, silky smooth in texture and neither deep nor concentrated, but retaining commendable tension on the finish. Enjoy it over the next decade.

The 2021 Chapelle d'Ausone wafts from the glass with notes of cherries, sweet berries and licorice framed by a creamy patina of new oak. Medium-bodied, pure and refined, with powdery tannins and a bright spine, it concludes with a mineral, vanillin-inflected finish. The blend contains no Merlot, as everything the vines produced went into the grand vin.
