Château Pavie Macquin

Château Pavie Macquin, Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, 2009

justerini & brooks tasting note

Another wine made by the Thienpont and Derenoncourt dream team. This is less sophisticated than the Larcis Ducasse, but it is extremely flashy, forward and imposing. There are notes of cool jam on the nose, currants and floral touches. The palate is a mass of cool dark fruit; a substantial Pavie Macquin with enormous extract and considerable power. The flavours are precise and long. This modern St Emilion is very impressive and possesses enormous tannic structure, but the tannins are round and ripe and should age well.

97/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

This is generous and yet given definition and character by the saline twist and pulse of electicity and minerality that shoots through the palate. Blackberry, cassis, soy, charcoal, crushed stone, orange peel, juicy on the finish. Higher alcohols at this point but effortlessly balanced by the fresh acidities and supple tannins. Part of the warm vintages series within this vertical. 80% new oak.

The 2009 Pavie-Macquin has a very high-toned and slightly volatile bouquet that detracts from its classiness compared to the Figeac. The palate is sweet on the entry with a lot of extracted tannin, rather ostentatious. It seems too showy on the finish. Enjoyable, but it lacks the class of more recent vintages. This is a strange showing. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' annual Ten Year On tasting.
