Château Teyssier, St Emilion Grand Cru, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Jonathan Maltus' Teyssier is probably the largest production from St Emilion, some 400,000 bottles will be made in 2022, and we have to say, the level of quality is remarkable. Head winemaker, Neil Whyte is assisted by superstar consultant oenologist, Thomas Duclos. The person responsible for the fiche technique is still living in the past. A typo we are assured. Harvest dates, whilst not the first in St Emilion, are significantly earlier than they used to be, capturing ripe, fresh fruit characteristics. Suggestions of brambly fruit on the nose with spicy oak. The palate is alive with a core of loganberry and cassis. Well-judged tannins frame the fruit leading to a salty, refreshing finish. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

critic reviews

90/100Chris Kissack,The Wine Independent

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with 30% in new oak for the élevage, the rest in mostly second-fill barrels. Lovely aromatics here, degraded black fruits in a dressing of tobacco and leather from the oak. A rather polished palate, with degraded fruit mirroring the nose, leathery tobacco oak, and a rich grip of dense, powdery tannins which should keep this moving forward for years. Bearing in mind the volume of production and the price point this is surely a success. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

The 2022 Teyssier presents a straightforward nose with mulberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with soy-tinged red fruit and a touch of spice on the aftertaste, making this an easygoing Saint-Émilion. Fine.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Teyssier has a deep bouquet of dark berries and spices. The oak is prominent at this stage. Medium-bodied, the palate is firm, compact and tannic. Its too oaky and dry for my tastes.
