Châteauneuf du Pape
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Châteauneuf du Pape, 2009

justerini & brooks tasting note

A Grenache dominated wine blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Clairette. All from the fine La Cra vineyard in the Bédarrides commune. The grapes are part de-stemmed and after fermentation the wine is aged for 10 months in concrete vats followed by 10 months in wooden foudres. There is more Mourvèdre in the blend this year than usual, as it was such a successful variety in 2009. Lovely bright fruit, this is grippy but the tannins are so fine-tuned, exhibiting gourmand, moreish sloe and damson fruit, hints of spicy liquorice and fresh herbs, sweet, silky smooth, long and complex with a floral, fruity finish. As ever this shows tell-tale Télégraphe composure and style with the ripeness, density and generosity of this 2009 vintage.

critic reviews

93/100Josh Raynolds,Vinous

(65% grenache, 15% each of mourvedre and syrah, and the rest all the other varieties; aged in a combination of foudres and concrete): Bright ruby. Intense red fruit and potpourri aromas show excellent precision and a suave, spicy character. Licorice and lavender nuances add complexity to juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, with the wine putting on weight in the glass. Finishes taut and youthfully tangy, with echoing licorice and spice notes.
