The Central Valley, also known as El Valle Central, is a pivotal wine-producing region in South America, spanning nearly 250 miles from the Maipo Valley to the Maule Valley in Chile. The region is often mistaken for the geological Central Valley, which is more extensive. With diverse climates and terroirs, it offers a wide spectrum of wine styles and qualities.
Northern Maipo is known for its premium Bordeaux-style wines, while, newer, cooler areas like the Andean foothills and coastal plains are gaining attention for their innovative wine-making approaches.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc dominate. Carmenère, considered Chile's 'icon' grape, also holds significant importance. The region's cooler areas are witnessing experimental plantings of grapes like Viognier, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer, as winemakers continue to explore.
