Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Jacques Frederic Mugnier, Nuits St Georges, Rouge, Clos de la Maréchale, 1er Cru, 2022

Dark Nuit notes with fine red berry highlights – a great combination. This has beautiful minerals at heart, a fine grip and verdant dark berry freshness, vertical tannins and a real sense of satisfying bite and grip. Salty sappy tension on the finish. Really good, really satisfying with proper structure built from very fine tannins. Virile and atheletic. At 9ha, this is the largest monopole in the Cote d'Or, with an average vine age of 50 years old. One hectare was uprooted and is currently being used as a site for rootstock and clonal trials – over 180 different combinations have been planted, to find those most adapted to our current climate. Based in the Premeaux Prissey commune, where the wines are very structured, Clos de La Marechale is built for ageing. Freddy Mugnier's skill has been in taming the naturally tannic character of the wines without supressing any vineyard expression.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has an open and expressive bouquet, quite pure in style, with brambly red fruit, loam and light iris flower scents. The palate is fresh with a slightly chalky-textured opening. It offers black plum and raspberry fruit with a very saline, quite feisty finish that manages to retain composure. Long finish. This is a fine Clos de la Marechale.

Jacques Frederic Mugnier

Created in 1863, this is a family estate run from the Château de Chambolle-Musigny. For years this was a miniscule four hectare Chambolle domaine, but since Frédéric Mugnier took back the family’s old Nuits St-Georges Monopole, Clos de la Maréchale, from Faiveley in 2004, the Domaine increased to 13 hectares. The aim is to produce wines that are each representative of their respective terroir and vintage, while at the same time having their individual character, wines of harmony and sincerity. This is achieved by eliminating weed-killers and industrial fertilisers in the vineyard; neither of these have been used for 10 years, whilst in the cellars all processes that traumatise the wine, over extraction, for example, or excessive woodiness, are limited to a minimum. To allow each terroir to express itself, the wine making is excatly the same for all of the wines. These are sensual, stylish Burgundies of great finesse.
