Sussex is a wine region in the south-east of England, overlapping both East and West Sussex counties, and is currently home to the highest concentration of vineyards in the UK. 700 hectares are currently planted with more expected to come, with producers keen to take advantage of the cool climate and the chalky soils of the South Downs. Sparkling wine is in its element here, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier particularly thriving; producers like Bolney Estate and Nutbourne are competing with the very best sparkling wines in the world. Still wines are also produced, though in lower volumes.
