Newton Johnson

Newton Johnson

Newton Johnson is a family estate located in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just 9km from the Atlantic Ocean. Famed for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, brothers Gordon and Bevan Newton-Johnson pursue bright, textural wines, and have done the Hemel-en-Aarde appellation a great service when it comes to putting the area on the fine wine map. Today, the estate comprises 15 hectares of north facing vineyards and 3.5 hectares of south facing vineyards. The soils are based on a vein of igneous, decomposed granite which the Newton-Johnsons believe provides the linear and particularly perfumed quality to their estate-grown wines. The wines are fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak and whole bunch use is kept to 15-30% on the whole. Elevage is carried out primarily in French barrique with judicious use of new oak, for around a year depending on the cuvee.
