Didier Dagueneau XXI

20 June 2024

With any luck, this cuvee is a one off. 2021 was a challenging growing season in this part of the Loire, one that began with Spring frosts and ended with the strictest of selections.

The resulting production across the Dagueneau vineyards was on average 60% less than normal. Individual cuvees made no sense, so Benjamin took the bold decision to combine the harvests for Silex, Pur Sang, Buisson Renard and Blanc Etc. The result is this single super cuvee named XXI.

It makes for a unique chance to taste the full portfolio of Dagueneau Loire vineyards in one glass. Racy, varietal and lip smacking, it marks a return to a cooler style of vintage that will appeal to those who enjoy electric Sauvignon Blanc with energy and edge.

Benjamin’s style of wine is a continuation of that which his father Didier originally forged. These are intense, age worthy Sauvignon Blancs that bear little resemblance to the ubiquitous and gluggable versions that are found on almost every wine list in France and the UK. Obsessive about vineyard health and low yields, the team makes repeated passes through the vines at harvest to select only the most optimal fruit, before fermentation and ageing in a variety of barriques, demi-muids, fudres and glass demi-johns. After roughly a year in oak, a further 6-9 months in steel tanks helps to dial up the tension in the wines – to the extent that one really is looking to give these at least five years post-harvest to experience them at their best. The finest vintages last for decades.
