Château Larcis Ducasse, Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

Our tasting of the Nicolas Thienpont wines with his son, Cyril at the beautifully situated Pavie Macquin was a real treat. Larcis Ducasse, Pavie Macquin and Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse all possess great terroir; sometimes we find the wines are a bit over the top and lack energy - this certainly wasn't the case in 2015. Larcis, based on the limestone and clay plateau and Cote next to Chateau Pavie is like opening up a box of chocolate liqueurs. Aromas of griotte, incense, hedgerow fruit and sloe all leap from the glass. There is also the tell-tale Larcis minerality; liquid minerals and graphite. The palate is crisp and fresh with lots of cassis and strawberry notes. There is tremendous energy, zip and finesse to balance the impressive fruit content. This is the smartest Larcis we've seen in many years. 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc.

critic reviews

Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2015 Larcis Ducasse lacks a bit of brightness on the nose compared to its peers. This was sullen on the day of tasting. The palate is stoic and medium-bodied with strict tannins. It's missing some bandwidth and is simplistic on the finish. Another bottle was tasted at the Vinous Icons Bordeaux seminar, which did not deliver the same freshness and precision as its peers. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners.

Composed of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Larcis Ducasse is deep garnet colored. The nose is a little shy and grumpy to start off, offering glimpses at tar, damp soil, truffles, burnt rubber, and smoked meats notes, before going full peacock and revealing gregarious notes of kirsch, juicy black plums, wild blueberries, and violets, followed by a waft of star anise. The full-bodied palate explodes with bright, opulent red, black, and blue fruit layers, showing off this vineyard's remarkable tension and very fine-grained tannins, finishing very long and very fragrant. Enjoy it now, after decanting a good 2-3 hours previously, or forget it in the cellar for another 6-8 years and drink it over the next 25 years+.
