Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Intense, explosive and mouth filling fruit with huge grip and muscle. This has a different kind of energy to the Clos de Bèze, less subtle but no less impressive. An imposing strength, bursting with wild ripe berries that run freely across the palate, underpinned by deep complex notes of cool earth, struck stone, sloe and undergrowth with a tinge of damson liquer sweetness on the finish. Hearty, profound and energetic with a firm minerally core. One tiny parcel of 0.12 ha is situated on the Chambolle side of the vineyard. The predominant core of this cuvée comes from two parcels in the Morey commune, one of which is next to Clos de Tart, planted on limestone-rich marne blanche soils giving structured and powerful style of Bonnes-Mares. One part was planted in 1946 another in 1980. This makes Bruno Clair the only producer with Bonnes-Mares vines within the Morey-St.-Denis commune.

critic reviews

96/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a lifted, perfumed and quite floral bouquet of brambly red fruit infused with wilted rose petal and a touch of blood orange. Gorgeous! The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, a killer line of acidity and perhaps some discreet stem addition, as it is overtly peppery toward the finish. Plenty of freshness and quite linear. Classic Burgundy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
