Gevrey Chambertin, Clos St Jacques, 1er Cru
Bruno Clair

Gevrey Chambertin, Clos St Jacques, 1er Cru, 2011

justerini & brooks tasting note

Very fine tannins, gripping, airy red fruits, long fresh and exquisite precision. High-toned flavours of cherry, strawberry, loganberry and sweet damson. Strong, but fine-boned, long, ripe and fresh. As noble and complete as Gevrey gets. One of the wines of the vintage. One of Gevrey’s great Premiers Crus situated high up on the slope, many believe it to be more deserving of Grand Cru status than a number of Gevrey’s more dubious Grands Crus. This high situation and red clay-based soils make for wines of freshness, tension and well-defined structure.

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru from Bruno Clair has a splendid bouquet that appears to be evolving with style: wonderful delineation, seamlessly integrated oak and commendable fruit intensity. This just unfolds with panache. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp acidity, sensual and pure with a precise, caressing finish brimming over with tart red cherries and strawberry, the essence of Pinoté! Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.
