Aloxe Corton, Clos du Chapitre, 1er Cru
Génot Boulanger

Aloxe Corton, Clos du Chapitre, 1er Cru, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

A different profile from the Pommard Clos Blanc being deeper, riper and more brooding and closed. There is grip and power here to go with the tell-tale "Genot Boulanger" finesse. A initial wave of creme de mure and kirsch wash over the palate. Aeration exposes more complex, fresher notes of mineral, gravel and earth. Floral cherry blossom notes elongate the finish. Powerful and layered, this needs a little coaxing from its shell but sumptuously rewards as it emerges. A magnificent due south-facing parcel of 50 year old vines towards the bottom of the Clos where the soil is redder clay than further up, with traces of flint and limestone. De-stalked prior to fermentation. Aged in 20% new oak barrels for 12 months followed by 6 months in tank.

The 2019 Aloxe-Corton Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru comes from a single-hectare parcel shared with Domaine Folin-Arbelet. It has an attractive loamy bouquet of red currant and strawberry scents. The palate has a tender, well-defined opening, a smooth texture and a judicious pinch of white pepper toward the persistent finish. This is a lively, winsome Aloxe-Corton.
