Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2007

For some reason our visits to Calon always seem to be first thing in the morning when our palates are tinged with coffee and toothpaste, but it never seems to make the slightest difference to our enjoyment of these wines. The 2007 (which is blended from 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot and aged in 100% new oak) is no exception, offering as it does piercingly fresh high-toned blueberry and blackberry fruit on the nose, robed in fine minerals and backed by a warm oak structure, while on the palate there is compact blackcurrant, crunchy and tense with a coating of coal dust and fresh acidity. Medium weight, long and balanced, the palate finished on high, fine tannins. A very good effort.

Medium red-ruby. Redcurrant, smoke, pepper and tobacco leaf on the nose, with a hint of floral lift and a rustic leathery nuance. Quite dry, even austere, in the middle, with peppery acidity currently keeping the red fruit and smoke flavors under wraps. The slightly dry finish features a green edge. Seems distinctly clenched today; will this wine blossom with bottle aging?

Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur

This is the most northerly of all the wines classified in 1855. The estate is steeped in history, once forming part of the Segur estate which incorporated Phelan Segur as well as Lafite, Latour and Mouton. The Marquis de Segur famously declared that ‘I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon’. This presumably explains the proliferation of hearts at the estate and on the label.

More recently, following her husband’s death in 1995, Denise Capbern Gasqueton has managed the estate. Her wines are classical, true to their terroir and have found much admiration from collectors and drinkers. Madame Capbern Gasqueton passed away in 2011 and the estate has been sold to the French Insurance company Suravenir. A new chapter starts...
