Marquis de Calon Ségur, St Estèphe, 2017

Tasting Note:

The Marquis de Calon is a really good second wine, but it rather suffers coming after the exceptional Capbern. It is plumped up with Merlots that used to go into the Grand Vin. These certainly lend weight and texture at the expense of Cabernet perfume and intensity. This is stony and mineral with a plush red fruit core of raspberry and loganberry. It is gently handled with sympathetic extractions, but it just doesn't sing like the Capbern does at this moment. Apparently the Marquis with time in bottle eclipses the Capbern. 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 57% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
