Chateau Montlandrie, Cotes de Castillon, 2015

2015

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Chateau Montlandrie, Cotes de Castillon, 2015

Denis Durantou is famed for his wonderful Pomerol estate, Chateau L'Eglise Clinet, but he has spread his wings to St Emilion, Lalande de Pomerol and Castillon, and it is perhaps in these communes that he has best demonstrated his Midas touch. Year after year, the likes of La Chenade and Montlandrie have topped our best value poll, and now we are seeing Saintayme and Cruzelles appearing there too. Two thirds of the final blend comes from vines planted by Denis in 2009. We've always loved Montlandrie. The clay and limestone terroir near to the windmill has enormous potential and Denis always seems to capture the essence of this plot. It is usually just on the right side of glossy; a polished, modern style, but true to its terroir. The 2015 must be one of the finest examples to date. Produced from 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cabernet has real character giving a real sense of finesse, energy and an aromatic quality. Notes of flowers, graphite, blåbär and wild plums. There is a wonderful sappy intensity and minerality to the sumptuous palate. Vital, classical and grippy; an impressive Montlandrie!

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

Montlandrie 2015 is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and is deep garnet in color. It charges out of the glass with bold, maturing notes of plum preserves, Christmas cake and dried mulberries, plus touches of cigar box and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bright acidity and chewy tannins supporting the concentrated, decadent black fruits, finishing long and lifted.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2015 Montlandrie, matured in 45% new oak, has a very succinct and cohesive bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, briary and light espresso scents. The wood is beautifully assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, a little savory and dried blood surfacing toward the finish to complete a glorious wine that fulfills its promise from barrel. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

Château Montlandrie

Château Montlandrie

It is hard to think of anyone more charismatic or energetic in Bordeaux than the dynamic Denis Durantou. His flagship Chateau L’Eglise Clinet is regarded as Pomerol royalty, but for those who want exceptional quality and like the idea of a bargain, should fill their boots with Chenade, Saintayme, Les Cruzelles and Montlandrie. The latter is Denis’ property on the hill of Castillon.

Castillon is a continuation of the Cote of St Emilion and this is reflected in the terroir of this 12 hectare vineyard. Clay and limestone soils and a steep southerly facing aspect provide perfect conditions. Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominate plantings (65% and 20% respectively) with 15% of Cabernet Sauvignon.

2009 was the first vintage Denis produced and it was a roaring success. Voluptuous, silky and characterful, it was a superb debut. The 2010 reached even greater heights with clearer delineation and even more lavish fruit. Subsequent vintages have gone from strength to strength. It is extremely rare if Montlandrie does not feature in our top ten ‘best value’ picks – it is a wine we love to buy and drink for its immediate charms, but have no doubt, this is a serious, dense wine with plenty of ageing potential.
