    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

After an uncharacteristically straight forward journey to Yquem, we were greeted by President, Pierre Lurton and winemaker, Sandrine Garbay. 87% Semillon 13% Sauvignon Blanc harvested at 13.55° of potential alcohol and fermented with 141g/l of residual sugar. The crop equalled the record high (in 2009), yields averaged 22hl/h, but 40% will be downgraded. Harvest started on 20th September and finished on the 29th of October after 6 tries. The bulk of the crop was harvested between the 14th and 24th of October with a record daily harvest being recorded on the 22nd. The wine itself has been likened to the 88. We found it to be a lighter style of Yquem with wonderful purity, elegance, precision, detail and freshness. It's not a blockbuster like the 01, 07 and 09; this is very fine and exquisitely balanced with notes of butterscotch, honeysuckle, lemon zest, orange blossom, peaches, apricots, acacia and mineral notes. This is an Yquem built on intense fruit, delicate sweetness, clarity and wonderful balance, helped by the low pH (3.8). Very feminine.

Intense, opulent and concentrated apricot, toasted almond, citrus zest, juicy lemon, vivid and expressive, with a clean lift through the palate that practically lifts you off your feet. Huge persistency, white truffles and pink grapefruit. An exceptional wine that shows why Yquem continues to resonate to strongly around the world.

A blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, with 138 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2010 Yquem has a pale to medium straw-gold color. After considerable aeration, it erupts from the glass with a powerhouse of flamboyant notes of crystalized ginger, honeydew melon, mango pudding, and lime leaves, followed by nuances of honeysuckle, white pepper, fennel seed, and crushed rocks. The palate is fantastically fruity, youthful and oh-so-rich, delivering citrus and tropical fruit layers with compelling tension, finishing very long and with wonderful purity.

The 2010 Yquem has an attractive bouquet with marmalade, caramelized pear, orange pith and light puff pastry notes. It just needs a little more delineation. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, lightly spiced and impressive focus. Like the aromatics, I would have just liked a little more precision on the finish. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.
