Jean Noël Gagnard, Santenay, Clos de Tavannes, 1er Cru, 2017

Aromatic, clear forest fruits on the nose. The palate is spicy and berryish with a little tannic crunch to it. Floral, juicy sweet damson, plum and cherry fruit on the finish. One of Santenay’s most prestigious Premier Cru, situated east of the village next to Chassagne-Montrachet. Rarely more than 100 cases of this incredible value red Burgundy are produced each year. Ageing is in used oak barriques.

The 2019 Santenay Clos de Tavannes 1er Cru offers pretty brambly red fruit on the nose, a little earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red cherry and cranberry notes. It is missing a little density on the mid-palate perhaps, but with plenty of freshness and tension on the finish. Drink over the next 5-7 years.
