Remarkably pretty from the first tilt of the glass, the 2022 Fiano di Avellino Exultet lifts up with a pretty honeyed floral quality, like freshly bloomed spring flowers, followed by suggestions of chamomile, mint and crushed yellow apple. This envelops the palate with silky textural fruits, showing the warmth of the vintage yet with a core of candied lime and zesty acidity to balance, as ripe green melon comes together with saline minerals to create a display of contrasts. The 2022 finishes remarkably fresh and with a subtle tension, already showing beautifully today yet in no rush to reveal all of its charms. This rendition of Exultet is richer and fruit-forward than I'm accustomed to, but the balance is gorgeous. That said, I'd find it difficult to get through more than a couple of glasses.

Quintodecimo

Quintodecimo

Owner Luigi Moio was born into an historical family of winemakers in Campania dating back to 1880. After an extended stay in France studying viticulture and winemaking, Luigi returned to Italy in 1994 and in addition to teaching at the University of Naples, undertook the task of winemaker at various prestigious Italian wineries. The urge to do his own thing and make the highest quality wines possible in his beloved Campania became too strong to resist and in 2001 his dream was realised and Quintodecimo was born. The estate covers 25 hectares of vineyard, centred on the hill of Mirabella Eclano 420 metres above sea level and a sizeable 7ha of prime Greco vineyard at 450 metres altitude in Tufo, where they benefit from warm summers and fresh nights. There are two red wines: a Taurasi Riserva called Vigna Quintodecimo (Aglianico) and a second wine called Terra d’Eclano (Aglianico). The three white wines from grapes indigenous to Campania are: Exultet (Fiano di Avellino), Giallo d’Arles (Greco di Tufo) and Via del Campo (Falanghina). Features of winemaking including low yields (5 bunches per vine for the reds) and low sulphur usage. The whites are 25% barrel fermented and aged, with the rest in steel tanks, there is no malolactic fermentation. The reds are aged in a third new oak barriques for 16-18 months. One of the most ambitious projects to come out of Campania, Quintodecimo's wines are unbelievably intense without being heavy or cloying, displaying such deep, vivid varietal and regional character.
