Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Grand Cru, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

“Who wants to follow Clos St Jacques?”. It’s not an easy task. “Oh go on then” replies an oh so confident Clos de Bèze. But this is not a bombastic wine; demure at first, it reveals it’s beauty slowly offering up sophisticated power, regal persistence, and a truly noble Grand Cru structure haunts the palate even as the next wine is poured into your glass. The finish here is sensational. Tightly packed, with lots to unravel, the sense of effortless power really is thing to behold, the strength and concentration of this Beze delivered so gently. Two thirds of this plot were planted in 1912 and the remainder in 1972. The parcel extends upwards on the slope. The upper part, poorer and stony, gives an aromatic wine of great finesse whereas the lower part, richer and clayey brings power and richness.

critic reviews

94-96/100William Kelley,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2023 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is also terrific, bursting with notes of dark berry fruit mingled with hints of peony, vine smoke, orange zest and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's elegantly fleshy, with supple tannins, succulent acids and a long, spicy finish.

The 2023 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a delectable bouquet, so pure and refined, with razor-sharp delineation and gorgeous, vivacious red fruit tinged with bay leaf and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and crushed stone minerality. It is wonderfully balanced, with a touch of black pepper lingering on the finish. Outstanding.
