Monzinger, Niederberg, Riesling Trocken, Erste Gewachs, 2020

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Niederberg is the extension of the hillside adjoining Halenberg with the same blue slate and quartzite soils. The difference lies in its steepness (being 40 degrees vs Halenberg’s 70 degrees). Produced from 30 year old vines, the Niederberg Trocken 1G tenders very pure, dry, cool blue mineral flavours with a touch of lemon sherbet, thyme, smoke, apple and lime. Racy and cleansing. Fermented and matured in traditional German fuders, same as the GGs.

critic reviews

94/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Vinified in large oak casks (mainly 2,400-liter doppelstucks) and bottled in May, the 2020 Monzinger Niederberg 1G is bright and precise on the pure and mineral nose. Filigreed, precise and firm on the palate, this is a concentrated and still challenging Niederberg that needs lots of air to open up and get more charm. A second bottle that was opened three days before is more intense and aromatic on the complex nose, whereas on the palate, this is a round and rich but elegant and refined Riesling with a salty, piquant and powerful finish. Still more on the textural rather than the fruity side, but this bottle indicates excellent quality and aging capacity of the Niederberg that comes as Erstes Gewachs, or premier cru, abbreviated as 1G. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021.
